How do IFRE’s high school volunteer abroad experiences work?

how ifre works

While we continuously provide new and diverse projects, the core outline generally remains consistent across the board. Itineraries will vary, but the program as a whole follows a simple and easy-to-understand path. We’ve put together a sample of how our high school volunteer vacations work and what you can expect.

Step 1: Introduction and orientation

Volunteer orientations typically last between one and seven days, depending on the program your students have chosen. This is the crash course on the work they’ll be doing and the country they’ll be doing it in. They’ll leave orientation knowing all of the vital information about culture, politics, religion, and society in their destination country. Our longer orientations include language and cultural immersion elements, so your students can expect some heavier learning if their orientation is longer than two days.

Step 2: Volunteering

Our programs are diverse and span across a number of industries, including health care, education, child care, construction, conservation, and more. Your students will pick one project to work on, which will have no more than four fellow volunteers (five including your student) in the group. IFRE takes care of all accommodation needs and most transportation requirements during the high school volunteer abroad experience.

Step 3: Travel and explore (2-12 days)

This is adventure time! During this phase your students will get to discover the country they’re volunteering in and really immerse themselves in the culture. This is where they check off all the things on their bucket lists and spend their days in nature or vibrant cities. If their high school volunteer abroad group has more than three people, they’ll even have the option to completely customize their itinerary and make it fit their needs. Contact the team at IFRE if you or your students want to take this opportunity.

Accommodation and meals on IFRE high school volunteer vacations

room food

IFRE will organize accommodation and meals as part of the program fee. It will always depend on the country and project, but generally we have a range of options, including staying with a host family or in a volunteer house. Our other options are hostels and budget hotels. All of our accommodation options are of a high standard and we guarantee your students will find them comfortable and clean. If your students have a preference, please let their representative know. Many high school volunteer abroad travelers prefer to stay with a host family so they can truly immerse themselves in the language and culture.

Three meals a day are included and will be tasty and more than enough to live on. We always get great feedback from our volunteers about the amazing local food.

Free time and travel

Your students won’t be working very long hours on their high school volunteer abroad trip, so they can feel free to enjoy their spare time each day. Typical working hours are about 4-6 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. Any time outside of that is theirs to play with. Exploring the local area is always popular, just make your students know they need to be back in time for their next shift. If they want to chill out and practice their new language, that’s great too.

Safety and support on IFRE high school volunteer abroad adventures

Safety for our volunteers is IFRE’s number one priority. We do everything we can to make our programs safe so our volunteers and their families don’t have to worry while they’re away. For more than a decade we’ve facilitated hundreds of high school volunteer abroad trips without any safety concerns at all. We guarantee only the highest standard.

Check out our extensive safety measures below to put your mind at ease.

Local support staff and coordinators: We always have a team on the ground in all of our volunteer countries. Their purpose is to support and assist volunteers whenever they need help or guidance during their high school volunteer abroad project. Our people are hardworking, passionate, and professional and know how to keep your students safe and make sure they get the most out of their experience. You won’t have to worry about calling a US-based number to talk to a call center; our team will be with your students in the country they’re volunteering in. They’ll also be responsible for arrangements, such as:

  • Airport pick up
  • Transportation to accommodation or host family
  • In-country orientation
  • Introduction to project and colleagues
  • Visits and calls to check in on volunteers
  • Full support if volunteers need help or if something goes wrong

Airport pick up: Airports can be some of the most stressful locations, which is why we’ve made sure volunteers will be met by an IFRE team member when they arrive. We’ll take them directly to their accommodation and make sure everything is okay before we leave them to get acquainted with their surroundings.

Orientation: The high school volunteer abroad orientation is crucial and will provide students with important information about their host country, including culture, religion, society, politics, and local customs. Most importantly, this is where they’ll get their safety briefing, which is vital for keeping themselves out of danger in a new country. Their orientation will last between one and seven days. Longer orientations of more than two days will also include some language immersion.

Accommodation: IFRE only selects host families and other accommodation based on our very high standards and selection criteria. We guarantee that accommodation for the duration of the volunteer’s trip will be comfortable and safe. The overwhelming majority of our host families have a lot of experience hosting international volunteers, so they’re in very good hands!

Safety

Travel insurance: All high school volunteer abroad attendees must have travel insurance. Check that providers cover all medical expenses, as well as other emergency services, theft, and cancellation. IFRE also offers comprehensive insurance to volunteers if they have not bought travel insurance from another provider.

Always take caution and check for travel warnings: Teachers, leaders, and students are advised to keep checking their government’s travel advice website to make sure there are no new warnings or incidents in their volunteer country. These websites are always kept up to date and are the best source of online information regarding safety.

Stay healthy: IFRE recommends checking the Center for Disease Control and Health in regards to health issues that could affect students in their host country. Visit www.cdc.gov for all the information you’ll need on your students’ high school volunteer vacation. Hygiene in developing nations can always seem a little laxer than what we’re used to back home. Make sure your students know to drink only filtered water and eat from reputable eateries to ensure they don’t contract food poisoning, parasites, or bacterial infections. If volunteers are traveling to a country where mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria or zika are prevalent, they should bring strong insect repellent with them and take preventative tablets if available.

Essential contact information: IFRE’s international and local support teams are always available to help and safety on high school volunteer abroad trips is their main focus. Volunteers will be provided with all of the essential contact information before they get to their host country. Make sure they pack it in their carry on and always have it close by.
