Volunteering with Children in Community Childcare Centers in Thailand
Volunteers support local childcare centers operated by local governments and Buddhist temples, which provide daily care, basic education, and a safe environment for children from low-income and working-class families.
These community-run child development centers focus on early childhood education for children and age group varies 3 – 6 years and 7 to 12 year, combining childcare with pre-primary learning. The centers emphasize social, emotional, and physical development while introducing basic English, hygiene habits, and play-based learning activities to help children be prepared for formal schooling.
Volunteering with Children in Non-Formal Education (NFE) Centers in Thailand
Volunteers work with Non-Formal Education (NFE) centers that provide flexible compulsory education (Grades 1–9) and vocational skills for out-of-school children, youth, and adults facing economic, social, or cultural barriers. Thailand has an extensive NFE network, with approximately 10,000 community learning centers operating nationwide at provincial, district, and sub-district levels.
In Ayutthaya Province, there are more than 200 NFE centers. To ensure coverage of standard working hours (approximately 4 hours per day), volunteers may be deployed across two or three designated centers.
Volunteering with Children in Special Education Schools in Thailand
Volunteers assist in special education schools that provide tailored education and therapeutic support for children with disabilities, including visual, hearing, physical, intellectual, learning, behavioral, autism, communication, and multiple disabilities. The designated school supported by volunteers serves more than 200 children, including approximately 170 boarding students and 60-day students living with their families in nearby communities. Volunteers provide support both inside and outside the classroom, assisting with learning activities and daily routines.

Skills and Qualifications
This volunteer with children program in Thailand does not require volunteers to have any specific education or experience. However, you should have a deep love for children and genuinely enjoy working with and spending time with them. Related skills and prior experience are highly appreciated for volunteering in Non-Formal Education (NFE) Centers and Special Education Schools. Additionally, you should be kind, patient, and flexible, and possess a passion for improving the lives of those less fortunate than you.
Volunteer Responsibilities and Impact
As a volunteer in the childcare project in Thailand, you will work closely with community childcare centers, special education schools, and non-formal education centers for 4 to 5 hours a day, from Monday to Friday. Depending on your skills, you will be teaching English as well as other subjects like health, math, science, and computers, as well as providing daily care to the children. Additionally, you will be organizing and leading extracurricular activities like games, sports, and creative pursuits, as well as teaching children useful life skills like gardening, painting, sewing, and others. You may also be asked to assist with administrative tasks like fundraisers, assisting families and planning excursions.
Most importantly, you will provide love and care to the children who are with you. Through this effort, you will provide a ray of light in the lives of underprivileged kids, greatly motivating and inspiring them towards a better future. You will also provide relief to overworked local care workers and free up parents to work on improving the conditions for their families.
Volunteer Schedule
Your time spent volunteering with children in Thailand will be an exciting one, as you have fun-filled experiences every day and meet fascinating people and lovely children.
On arrival at the airport in Thailand, you will be taken to your accommodation and given a briefing about the project the following morning. Your volunteer work then starts on the second day.
On a typical day, you will be served breakfast in the early morning together with fellow volunteers and set out to your work placement around 7:30-8:00 am. You will generally spend the first few hours from 9 am to 11:30 am working directly with the children, before helping serve food for the kids’ lunch break, and then enjoying your own immediately after.
In the afternoon, between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, the children usually rest or nap. During this period, volunteers can spend relaxed time with the children through gentle play, singing, dancing, or simple interaction. When available, volunteers are also welcome to assist with renovation project at the facility or various community project around the village.
At 3 pm, your duties will generally be over, and you are free to explore Ayutthaya for the rest of the evening or return to your accommodation, where a delicious Thai dinner will be served at 6:30 pm, giving you an excellent chance to get to know your fellow guests.
