Skills and Qualifications:
No specific qualification are needed to join orphanage volunteer program in Kenya.
This project needs volunteers filled with deep love and passion for children and a desire to make the world a better place. While anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to apply, regardless of experience or education, you need to be a kind, flexible and patient individual who enjoys spending time with children.
Volunteer Responsibilities & Impact:
When you join volunteer in the orphanage project in Kenya, you will provide tutoring to the children in the orphanage where they are being home-schooled, assisting with homework and monitoring their academic progress.
Additionally, you will teach and assist the children with personal hygiene, such as brushing teeth and showering. In the evenings you will organize games and creative educational activities such as drawing, singing, dancing and more.
While the children are in school during the day, you will help the staff with administrative work such as cleaning, cooking and gardening, which will constitute the majority of your work at the orphanage.

We work with several orphanages in Kenya, and as each one has its own needs, programs and activities, there is no fixed schedule or exact daily itinerary. You should be prepared to give a helping hand at all times in a wide range of tasks and activities.
On your first day of volunteering, you will be taken to orphanage by one of our local coordinators and introduced to the orphanage staff that you will be working with. During this day you will get to familiarize yourself with the facilities, the staff and your duties at the orphanage.
- A typical weekday will look something like this:
- 6.00 to 7.30 AM: You will start the day with a traditional Kenyan home-cooked breakfast with your host family.
- 7.45 AM: After breakfast you set out for a fulfilling day volunteering at the orphanage. Here you will spend the whole day helping kids, as well as various administrative tasks like cleaning, cooking.
- 12.00 PM: At noon there will be a lunch break, you will spend time with the orphanage staff and other international volunteers, providing an excellent opportunity to make lifelong friends.
- 3.00 PM: After a few more hours, the workday ends, and you are free to head back to your host family, or spend some more time with the kids at the orphanage, or go exploring the nearby area.
- 6.45 PM: In the evening you will be served a traditional home-cooked dinner with your host-family, giving you the chance to get to know both them and their culture more intimately.
Kenya Orphanage Volunteer: Dates and Fees
As a respected international volunteer organization, IFRE is dedicated to offering volunteer opportunities at an affordable rate, allowing anyone regardless of financial status, the chance to experience Kenya and also make a visible difference in the lives of orphans there.
Our fees at IFRE are composed of two parts, first a $299USD application fee, which covers our administrative fees such as staff, offices and advertising.
Second is the weekly program fee for your Kenya volunteering program paid directly to your host-family and orphanage project (via the country coordinator), covering your daily expenses such as accommodation, food, field support and other minor expenses. This allows for full transparency, letting you see exactly where your money is going, and who it helps.

Accommodation and Meal
During your time at the orphanage, you will be staying with a trusted and loving Kenyan host family. You host family will make sure you always feel safe, comfortable and part of the family, and provide you with delicious traditional Kenyan home-cooked meals. Not only will they make sure you are safe and well-fed, they will ensure that you have an amazing time during your stay.

Free Time and Weekends
While volunteering at an orphanage in Kenya you will have plenty of time and opportunity to explore the country both in the late afternoon and evenings of your weekdays, and also during the weekend when you will be free to travel anywhere you wish on tours throughout Kenya.

Kenya Orphanage Volunteer: FAQsArrival and Departure
You should fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi for your orphanage volunteering work in Kenya. Please arrive in Kenya one day before your project starts, and we suggest you talk to our Kenya country coordinator before departure in order to avoid any unnecessary complications.Airport picks up and Drop off
We organize airport pick-ups for our volunteers, and all you need to do is provide our staff with your flight details and then meet up with them at the airport. Upon your arrival, you will be picked up by our airport representative and transfer to your respective placement.
We do not offer airport drop off services, so this is something you need to budget for. The local staff at your placement and our in-country will be more than happy to assist you in booking the necessary transportation.Visa
It is compulsory to obtain a tourist visa in order to be eligible for our orphanage volunteering programs in Kenya. This can be secured by visiting the Kenyan embassy in your home country prior to departure.

Chikungunya, Dengue, DTP, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Malaria, Meningococcal, Mumps, Measles and Rubella, Rabies, Schistosomiasis, Tuberculosis, Yellow Fever and Zika virus are some of the vaccinations suggested by the CDC and WHO for those planning to do orphanage volunteering work in Kenya.
