Work on A Coffee Farm

organic-farming-in-costa-rica

If not grown sustainably, coffee farming can erode the soil it is being grown in, which leads to a lot of environmental issues. This is a real problem when there are currently 100 coffee trees growing for every person living in Costa Rica, and nearly 70,000 farms. The quality of life and treatment of migrant workers on some large coffee plantations is also cause for concern.

When you embark on this high school student’s volunteer trip abroad in Costa Rica, you will be working with farmers to plan and implement sustainable agricultural practices. You will learn to utilize non-synthetic pesticides, emphasize local varieties and species of crop, incorporate native plants, raise pastured livestock without the use of hormones or antibiotics, and practice crop rotation. You may also be asked to support community outreach or help with other farm tasks such weeding and sowing crops.

Small organic coffee farms act as a sustainable model for other local farms; they are important role models for future ecological practices. When you learn and help promote sustainable farming methods you set an example about positively impacting the environment. You will also further your own knowledge and help make the world a better place by encouraging sustainability and eco-friendly practices!

Dig your hands into the mountain soil and sow the seeds of change! If you’re interested in sustainable agriculture, you should consider organic farming in Costa Rica as your high school volunteer abroad experience.
