Sea Turtle Conservation Project (Osa Peninsula)

Sea turtles migrate to the beaches of the Osa Peninsula to lay eggs between arch and October every year. Sadly many turtles never make back to sea after due to the damage of the beaches, loss of eggs and human activities including hunting for the eggs and turtles for food, which is a delicacy in the area.

During volunteering opportunities in teen programs abroad, you will mainly focuses on the conservation of endangered species of turtles, the Black sea turtles and Hawksbill. You will be measuring the weight, size, and taking the blood, mucus and tissue samples from each turtle.

Due to alcoholism, domestic violence and illness Argentina has increased the number of orphans. The children start working at a very young age to earn money for survival. This project is located in Pinnawala conservation center in Sri Lanka. Human activities in these areas have destroyed the natural habitant and elephants need special care. Previously, these elephants were used for farming and carrying goods. Now that logging has been outlawed, these elephants have become redundant. As these elephants eat over 400 kg of food in a day, taking care of them has become extremely expensive.

Many mahouts have sold their elephants or taken them to the streets of big cities to beg for money from tourists, which is illegal and very dangerous and harmful for the elephants. The island of Nusa Penida, in Bali is beautiful with sandy white beaches. It has rich marine life with numerous underwater species including turtles. Skill and Qualifications

NO specific qualifications or skills are needed to join volunteer work abroad teen. However, you must be open minded and compassionate about helping poor people. How to prepare for volunteer abroad trips?

Travelling abroad can be an overwhelming process that must be prepared for extensively and with caution. For you to completely and totally enjoy your volunteering teen program abroad, IFRE advises you to extensively prepare for your trip abroad and ask  as many questions as possible.

Flight

You need to book and buy your plane ticket to your volunteer destination. Usually, looking for a ticket earlier can save you a lot of money. Goggle Flight, Kayak and CheapOAir, usually have deals all year round. Arrange to arrive at least one or two days before the start date of your programs.

Visa and Passport requirements

When travelling internationally, you will be required to have a valid passport. If you do not have a passport start the application process in time as sometimes it can take up to three months to get a new passport in some countries. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months.

A tourist visa is normally needed. Depending on your nationality, you can get on-arrival visa in some countries. Other countries require for a visa application process at the embassy of the country you are travelling located in your home country. Do your research to ensure you have the right information for your visa application process, to avid last minute disappointments.

Do I need any vaccinations?

When travelling to volunteer for teenage programs abroad, ensure you check out the Diseases Control website to see the vaccinations you required to the country you select for your volunteer trip. You can also consult your doctor for more advice. Vaccinations are required since most of the volunteer programs are in the rural area where healthcare is not affordable, so there is greater exposure for communicable diseases.

What do I need to pack?

You’ve probably read plenty of articles about what to pack before you take your teenage abroad volunteer trip. IFRE will usually provide you a guide depending on the country you will be traveling to. Always remember to pack the appropriate clothing, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a book, a camera and your toiletries. We always encourage our volunteers to bring a gift for the host family or for the project you will be working at.

Extra money

When travelling abroad always create a reasonable budget with every aspect put in consideration. You can budget for $20 or $50 per day. Always have a contingency amount put aside and planned just in case an emergency comes up. When you bring extra money you ensure that you are secure and everything you need is catered for.
