Sea Turtle Conservation Project (Pacuare)

Costa Rica is rich in its biodiversity, marine life and natural beauty. However, illegal fishing, ongoing construction, and tourism threatened marine species and ecosystems. Sea turtles and their eggs are considered a delicacy in Costa Rica, and they are often hunted and poached by local. Sea turtles in Costa Rica are in danger and need your help!

This program allows you to work in collaboration with local sea turtle conservationists. Your role as a volunteer may include protecting the area where turtles lay eggs, working in the hatchery, cleaning the beaches and more. You will also get to learn about the marine life and contribute to local outreach efforts.

Work In An Orphanage (Cusco)

Although Peru is a well-known tourist destination, more than half of the population lives on less than $2USD a day. This leaves thousands of children in desperate need for basic care and destined to live in a vicious poverty cycle. 

This project aims to provide homes, education, and love to these children. The orphanage has an atmosphere of a large family and the local staff are there 100% of the time to support and nurture the children. This program asks that volunteers teach English, help children with their homework, and lead extracurricular activities that help the children express themselves.

By providing love and attention these orphaned children who desperately crave and deserve it, you let them know that they are not worthless and deserve a bright future despite their rough beginning.  Your support will also have long-term results in building social skills and creating awareness of the opportunities available both in Peru and beyond its borders.

Guatemala remains one of the poorest countries in Africa due to various tragic circumstances. Thousands of Guatemalan children are left as orphans due to extreme poverty, abuse and alcoholism. There is a constant scarcity of sufficient resources and manpower to take care these orphans.

As a volunteer on a high school service trip in this Guatemala project, you will support kids as a mentor and friend, depending on your skills and interests. You will also be helping them with their homework and practicing English skills to help them improve. You will also organize workshops and playtime activities.

Teaching English In Rural Schools

Though an amazing place to visit, Argentina is recovering from a its difficult past; over one third  of the population lives in poverty. Children lack access to quality education, which make it harder for them to support their families so they can leave the vicious poverty cycle.

Brazil

Youth Project in Brazil

One of Brazil’s most prevalent social issue is it’s high poverty rates. Many local youths in favelas (shanty towns) are deprived of education. They get involved in drugs, theft, and other unlawful activities. This project in Brazil is designed to help those youths participate in different sports that will help them gain social, physical and emotional development and keep them off the streets.

As a high school student participating in this service-learning program, you will be working with local schools and organizations to organize and participate in sporting events, like skateboarding, volleyball and other athletic sports.

Skill and Qualifications

Some community service trips for high school students like healthcare, medical, and teaching English do have specific requirements. To work in healthcare, you must be a pre-med student, and to teach English you must be a fluent speaker.

Otherwise, the only requirement in general to participate in these volunteer opportunities is that you have an open-mind and passion for the project you are supporting.

The Start Date(s) 

All programs start on Mondays, although we will work with you if there’s a travel conflict.

The Fee

IFRE is a non-profit organization trying to change the world. We promote global humanitarian efforts and volunteer experiences at the most affordable rate.

In general, IFRE asks for a $299 registration fee which goes toward paying for local support, airport transfers, program donations, etc. You will also be asked to pay a weekly program fee during your summer high school service trip which is goes directly to your host family and service project.

Even with low program prices, IFRE maintains outstandingly high-quality volunteer programs. We do everything we can to ensure safe, fun, and meaningful volunteer abroad experience.

Housing and Food

The housing and food accommodations you receive depend on your project and country. Most volunteers stay with at least one other same-gendered student with one of our wonderful host families. However, you may also be asked to stay in a shared volunteer house, hostel, or cabin.

Whichever overseas high school community service trips you decide to join, our outstanding field staff will ensure that you are happy and comfortable in whatever type of accommodations you receive.
