The demand for English is on the rise around the world as more and more people from all countries seek employment in the global economy. Brazil is certainly no different. With floods of tourist visiting this country every year whether to participate in the Carnival or to lounge on the gorgeous Brazilian beaches those Brazilians equipped with the best English language skills will succeed in industries that support tourism. In Rio, IFRE has teaching opportunities in the low-income communities of Rocinha. This is Rio's largest favela (shantytown). As a volunteer, you can teach in a classroom setting, or go to students' homes to teach them there, or teach on one-on-one basis. The people you will encounter will be eager to learn from you, whether they are children or adults.

One of the critical issues facing the favelas in Brazil is the lack education. Many of the "better" schools are private and cost a lot of money, which the people living in the favelas can't afford. Many people who want to go to university decide to take extra courses to prepare, which again will cost more money. With our volunteers, you will help to improve the English of the children and maybe even motivate them to do better than the kids from well off families that go to better schools and have private tuitions. In the past, our volunteers have had a positive impact on the local children inspiring them to learn and work for a better future. Because of this, the local community has always highly appreciated the work our volunteers.

Another positive side to teaching English in Brazil with IFRE-Brazil is that you can become an instructor even if you in Rio for a small amount of time. IFRE-Brazil can place you in short-term teaching projects.

Please note school holiday in Brazil runs from Jan - March. The project will be unavailable during this time.

Skills/Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required to join the teaching English in Brazil project. However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help those less fortunate. While basic Portuguese fluency is preferred, it is not required. All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive.
Volunteers' Responsibilities

While teaching English in Brazil, volunteers will assist school-based local educators and language institutes with pre-established English curriculums involving both younger students and adults. Volunteers can expect to assist with developing conversational and grammatical English skills. Volunteer may also lend their personal English expertise with design of unique language activities for learners. Administrative duties of educational institutes may also require volunteer support or recommendations. Additional education of younger learners pertaining to issues of personal hygiene and sanitation is also important and schools have programs to delicately approach these subjects.

Room/Food
IFRE arranges room, breakfast and supervision for volunteer for the entire duration of volunteer in Brazil program. In Brazil, our volunteers will stay either in a hostel or with a local host family. The hostel accommodation is located in the downtown area and is in a safe and secure neighborhood. The neighborhood is called Santa Teresa and consists of picturesque views, charming shops, and a bohemian culture. Our volunteers will find it easy to travel to the project site as well as to other places in Rio famous for visitors, like the beaches and other attractions. Our host families all have experience of hosting international volunteers before. They will offer a safe and secure place for our volunteers to stay. Staying with host family will also give opportunities for our volunteers to immerse in local culture.

In the hostel, our volunteers will have to share the room with other volunteers of same sex. Breakfast will be served in the hostel but volunteers will need to eat lunch and dinner outside. Good food is inexpensive in Brazil and readily available.

During the project, our supervisor and project will be in touch with you. The volunteer coordinator lives minutes away if you need anything. If you need any advice or have any issue you need to discuss you can talk to them or call the coordinator.
