Project Summary
The demand for English is on the rise around the world as more and more citizens from all countries seek employment in the global economy. Brazil is certainly no different. With floods of tourist visiting this country every year – whether to participate in the stimulating festival of Carnival and other festivals or to lounge on the gorgeous Brazilian beaches – those Brazilians equipped with the best English language skills will succeed in industries that support tourism. The need for English in the Brazilian hospitality industry continues to rise with demand for English-speaking tour guides and hotel employees.
IFRE collaborates with numerous organizations and language schools to provide volunteer teachers for English courses in Brazil . Eager citizens are looking to further their education and hone their English conversational skills, yet many cannot afford lessons. In addition to English, volunteers can help with teaching many practical skills to Brazilians (i.e. personal hygiene, sanitation, etc.).
Skills/Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required to join the teaching English in Brazil project. However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help those less fortunate. While basic Portuguese fluency is preferred, it is not required. All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive.
Volunteers' Responsibilities
Volunteers assist school-based local educators and language institutes with pre-established English curriculums involving both younger students and adults. Volunteers can expect to assist with developing conversational and grammatical English skills. Volunteer may also lend their personal English expertise with design of unique language activities for learners. Administrative duties of educational institutes may also require volunteer support or recommendations. Additional education of younger learners pertaining to issues of personal hygiene and sanitation is also important and schools have programs to delicately approach these subjects.
Room/Food
IFRE manages living accommodations and meals with host families for the entire duration of the volunteer program. Our host families are all carefully screened, well educated and have experience with hosting international volunteers. Accommodations are clean, simply furnished rooms, which may be occasionally shared with other same-gender volunteers. Volunteers will receive three (3) local meals each day consisting of delicious local cuisine. Occasionally, if volunteers are away from their host families during lunch, they may be required to pack their own “to go” lunches. Our in-country staff offers supervision for the extent of the volunteer program.
