VOLUNTEER AFRICA
Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent – after Asia . The continent of Africa is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. There are 46 countries within continental Africa – including Madagascar – and 53 countries including all of the island groups. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas and is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate zone to southern temperate zone. Because of the lack of regular, naturally-occurring precipitation and irrigation – in addition to the absence of glaciers or mountain aquifer systems – there are no natural, moderating effects on the climates of Africa, except near the coasts.
Presently, IFRE offers Africa volunteer programs in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, and South Africa. IFRE is currently in the process of increasing its volunteering opportunities in Africa by adding additional countries and programs.
