The orphanages in Peru aim to offer homes, educations, and hope for orphans. At this particular program, volunteers primarily help orphans kids by teaching basic English and organizing creative, extra-curricular activities such as game, singing, music, drawing, etc. This program is the perfect place for volunteers looking for opportunities to share their love, passion, and skills with these very-unfortunate children.

Skill/Qualifications

There are no specific qualifications needed to join IFRE's volunteer street children project in Peru . However, volunteers are expected to be flexible and patient as well as possess a passion and love for children.

Volunteers responsibilities

In this program you will teach basic English to the children. In this program, volunteers work in a very poor shelter for transient street children. They receive children who will be sent back with their families if they ran away, or sent to orphanages if they were abandoned. The children, ages 5 through 17, do not have anything to do while the police and the court decide what to do with them and they are often remained locked in rooms. So volunteers keep them company, teach them English, play with them, paint or read. Kids love volunteers at these projects because volunteers are the only company they have. Working in the orphanage offers the opportunities to share your time, love, and passion for those children who have rarely experienced love in their life.

Room/Food

Volunteers in Peru stay in a home stay during the culture and language immersion program. You will have a private room and be fed three meals of Peruvian fare each day. Once the language and culture week/weeks are over, our coordinator takes you to your project for introduction. You could change host families at this time, depending on the location of your project. Some of the orphanage and Health Clinics are located in the outskirts of Cusco so you will be moved to a rural home closer to your project. This way you will have an easier commute to the sight each day.

Again, the vast majority of our Peru volunteers live with local host families where you are provided a private room and three meals. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are shared with the family and other volunteers (yes, you might have another volunteer living with you.) The host family doesn't offer laundry service but some will happily take up the task for a small fee, this is up to you to negotiate. If you choose to do your own laundry most families are happy to let you use their wash basins where you wash by hand then line dry your clothes.
