Volunteer Abroad Opportunities

Details of Language and Culture Program

Day 1: Orientation at IFRE's Katmandu Office:

In our Kathmandu offices, volunteers will join an orientation covering Nepal 's religion, culture, history, customs, politics, and geography. Also, participants will be briefed on necessary health and travel precautions. Volunteers are welcome to discuss any issues that interest them as well as ask any questions. Volunteers will also view a one-hour video showing the wonders of Nepali life. Volunteers will also have free time to explore the colorful Kathmandu bazaar .

Day 2: Nepali language and cultural immersion classes continues. (2-3 hours), rest is free time

Day 4: Nepali language class continues (2-3 hours).

In the evening, volunteers will move to a quaint, lovely rural village located in northeast Kathmandu. Volunteers will learn firsthand the unique ways of rural life through their welcoming Nepali host family. Daily life in this charming village is untouched by modern civilization. Its people still practice the traditional ways of farming, cooking, and working in the varied activities of the village. Volunteers continue to practice their language skills (with host family) while enjoying cross-cultural opportunities offered through their intriguing home stays. In their free time, volunteers can hike to nearby villages.

Day 5: Nepali language classes continue. Volunteers can practice the language they have learned in the past 3 days with host family. In the free time, our local guide will take you to hike in the village, where you will see the village life as well as its working people, farming systems, and traditions of Nepali life. If the weather is clear, you will have a bird's eye view of the imposing and legendary Mt. Everest , the world's tallest peak.

Day 6:

Sight-seeing in the valley of Kathmandu includes a guided tour of Katmandu Valley - organized to introduce our volunteers to the cultural and religious heritage of Nepal . We will visit historic wonders of the Katmandu valley which are named in the World Heritage's site list.

Day 7: Closing of program and departure for respective placement
