Internship in Peru : Conservation Project

This internship is a great opportunity for anyone pursuing a social/environmental career to learn more about their field. In this program, interns have the opportunity to work on different conservation projects such as biodiversity inventories, eco-tourism, re-forestation, as well as sanitation campaigns. There are currently not enough people to maintain the large areas needing conservation or to educate the people about the environmental efforts.

Skills/Qualifications

A conservation or environmental focus is the key to being successful in this project. Interns are expected to be reliable, flexible, and patient. However, interns interested in joining the conservation project should be ready for physically demanding work.

Intern's responsibilities

Assistance in maintaining trails in the municipal forests, promoting new projects, or assisting in the office with various administrative duties. The duties in the plant nurseries includes: digging, filling plastic bags, weeding, irrigating, and related works. Additional placements can be made directly in the national park systems where interns maintain trails, educate visitors, and more .

Andean Conservation: this is a conservation/cultural program. Interns have the chance to live in native communities with families; interns learn about their traditions and help in the farms in agriculture, construction, with the animals etc. Interns have the chance to help very poor communities and help them preserve their customs.

Biodiversity: we work with a project located at the edge of Manu National Park , which is the largest, most preserved rainforest area of Latin America . Interns help monitor some species of birds and monkeys, they also have, there is also an orchid garden where interns work.

Interns work with biology students and other professionals who are currently in the process of educating people from the surrounding villages on methods of preserving the areas where they live. They also have reforestation programs at certain times of the year. Interns live at a lodge in the rainforest.

Reforestation: IFRE works with an organization in charge of reforestation in Cusco . Traveling to nearby communities to plant and control the growth of trees, this project is available from September to December, which is the best time to plant trees. Interns can live in Cusco .

Zoo and Gardening: Interns work at the local zoo; most animals are from the Andean region. Interns help with cleaning and maintenance as well as with visitors, mostly children from different schools in Cusco .

Interns can also work at gardens and orchards of orphanages or community centers; they also have the chance to work with children at these projects. Interns live in Cusco and have the chance to attend Spanish lessons

Internship in Peru : Internship Project and Role of Supervisor

One of the most distinguished features of IFRE's internships in Peru is the guidance of supervisors. IFRE will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the project which interns choose. During your time as an international intern, you will be assigned a number of duties which volunteers also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between IFRE's volunteers and interns). In the internship, you will select a particular area of interest related to HIV/AIDS and explore the issue further with the help of an assigned supervisor. Please note: the project supervisor DOES NOT develop internships as this is up to the intern to get as much or as little out of their projects. ALL participants should be proactive to ensure the ultimate success of their internships. Supervisors will provide at least five (5) hours each week to make certain that interns are adequately guided.

Room/Food

IFRE arranges room, food, and supervision for interns from the beginning to the end of the program. For the duration of the internship, interns will stay in IFRE's hostel in Cusco . Alternatively, IFRE can also arrange living accommodations and meals with a regional host family. Regardless of chosen accommodations, interns will be provided with a separate room (sometimes shared with fellow interns) and usually shared bathroom and laundry facilities. In Cusco , IFRE's staff members visit interns every 7-14 days. Alternatively, if staying in Urubamba, Trujillo , or Arequipa - due to the distance from Cusco - IFRE will provide interns with a local contact person as well as maintain contact via phone or email.
