Internship in Cambodia : Teaching English Project
Many Cambodian citizens are living in poverty and cannot afford to send their children to expensive, private boarding schools where English is taught. IFRE's internship program in Cambodia collaborates with local schools to offer free English education (mostly conversational English) to local children. By working in an English-teaching program in Cambodia , you are providing vital English-education to poor children - ultimately improving their chances for a brighter future. Depending upon your personal skills and interests, you can teach English in an orphanage, at a public school, at a university, or within various local organizations running an English-teaching program. This is a very good opportunity for interns with an educational background to learn the basic fundamentals of teaching a class and gain some experience in their desired profession.
SkillS/QualificationS
There are no specific qualifications required to teach English in Cambodia . However, interns need only an interest and enthusiasm to teach English and help children. Non-native English-speakers with a masterful command of the English language may also be considered for this project.
Intern's responsibilities
Interns will primarily work as English-teachers/instructors either in public and/or private schools. Depending upon the need, interns may also be asked to assist in other extracurricular activities such as sports, games, etc. Some of the duties required of interns include:
- Teaching English in public schools, orphanages or universities
- Assisting with other creative, extracurricular activities (i.e. games, drawing, singing, dancing, etc.)
- Taking the students on educational tours/field trips (occasionally)
- Helping the students with their homework, monitoring their academic progress
- Assisting in other school-related activities or programs designed for the students
Internship in Cambodia : Internship Project and Role of Supervisor
One of the most distinguished features of IFRE's internships in Cambodia is the guidance of supervisors. Whichever projects you choose, IFRE will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the project which interns choose. During your time as an international intern, you will be assigned a number of duties which volunteers also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between IFRE's volunteers and interns). Wherein exists the differences between interning and volunteering is that the internship allows individuals to become more deeply involved in their chosen project (i.e. individuals interning in the English-teaching project will have the opportunity to focus on an area related to either education, English-teaching, academics, etc.). Please note: the project supervisor DOES NOT develop internships as this is up to the intern to get as much or as little out of their projects. ALL participants should be proactive to ensure the ultimate success of their internships. Supervisors will provide at least five (5) hours each week to make certain that interns are adequately guided.
Room/Food
IFRE arranges room, meals, and supervision for interns for the entire duration of the program. Depending upon the location of the project, interns will either stay in a hostel or with a host family. The families are very friendly and hospitable and look forward to learning more about the intern's culture and country. Whether you live in a hostel or host family, IFRE manages clean but simple accommodations within a separate room (occasionally shared with other interns), shared bathroom with cold water and a fan. IFRE also manages 3 local meals a day. Usually, interns have breakfast in either a small restaurant, with host families, or at work. IFRE manages Cambodian food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some interns have lunch at the orphanage. In the case of the intern having special eating requirements (e.g. as a vegetarian or vegan), we would recommend staying in a guest house, as meat is the basis of most Cambodian meals.
