Internship in Argentina: Teaching English Project
English is becoming more and more the language of global commerce. As this trend further emerges - affecting all countries in every corner of the world - proper English education provided by native English-speakers (or individuals with a high level of English fluency) are becoming more and more of a priceless necessity. Argentina is obviously a great example of this as the number of tourists visiting this diversified country increases every year. Unfortunately, many of the impoverished citizens of Argentina cannot often afford adequate English education for their children (or themselves) - making the role of interns willing to bestow their skills upon the Argentinean masses crucial. Your role as an intern can help make a difference in these children's lives. This is a very good opportunity for interns with an educational background to learn the basic fundamentals of teaching a class and gain some experience in their desired profession.
IFRE collaborates with rural schools surrounding Córdoba - reaching out to citizens not residing within the confines of the city. Interns usually teach English to a small public school educating kindergartners and elementary school students. The school which interns conduct English lessons in offers classes to a number of rurally-residing Argentineans over a large area (sometimes teaching more than 130 children).
Skills/Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required to join the English-teaching project in Argentina . However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help less fortunate children. While Spanish is preferred it is not required. IFRE offers free Spanish lessons to interns in Córdoba. Interns are expected to be flexible, adaptive, patient and proactive.
Intern's responsibilities
Interns will assist school-based educators in teaching English to children residing in the outlying, rural areas of Córdoba. In addition to teaching English, interns will also assist in teaching other subjects, as well as helping children with their homework, helping with recreational activities, arts-related exercises, encouraging various levels of the children's self-expression, supporting the kitchen staff (serving meals, cleaning, etc.) as well as routine maintenance. Assistance may also be needed with various administrative duties of the school as well as providing help with educating the younger learners pertaining to issues of personal hygiene and sanitation.
Internship in Argentina: Internship Project and Role of Supervisor
One of the most distinguished features of IFRE's internships in Argentina is the guidance of supervisors. IFRE will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the project which interns choose. During your time as an international intern, you will be assigned a number of duties which volunteers also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between IFRE's volunteers and interns). In the internship, you will select a particular area of your interest related to teaching English and explore the issue further with the help of your assigned supervisor. Please note: the project supervisor DOES NOT develop internships as this is up to the intern to get as much or as little out of their projects. ALL participants should be proactive to ensure the ultimate success of their internships. Supervisors will provide at least five (5) hours each week to make certain that interns are adequately guided.
Room/Food
IFRE manages living accommodations and meals within a regional guesthouse located in a charming neighborhood within the city of Córdoba . The city of Córdoba boasts a number of exciting opportunities for interns wanting to see a city with a bright future that still maintains reverberations of its colonial and culture-rich past. Córdoba's plentiful cultural has produced a number of influential writers, its own musical styles (known as 'the cuarteto' in addition to tastes of classical, jazz, rock, pop and electronic), abundant monuments, lively festivals, enthralling theaters and a pulsing nightlife. Interns reside in accommodations which are located just minutes from the downtown area. This unique living situation is often quite conducive to fellow interns becoming acquainted with each other. Furthermore, Spanish AND Tango lessons are provided for participants in these living accommodations which also conveniently double as our local operator's headquarters - ensuring constant contact with in-country coordinators. Interns will receive three (3) local meals each day.
