Why IFRE's Internship Abroad Program?

The success of our volunteer and humanitarian trips abroad inspired us to begin offering a number of internship abroad programs. Selecting a number of grassroots organizations providing assistance in the areas of adolescent aide, community development, HIV/AIDS, medical/healthcare and gender equality, IFRE offers an unsurpassed variety of unique, internships abroad in 10 developing countries throughout continental Asia, Africa and Latin America - covering a multitude of educational disciplines and interests. Through these international internships, IFRE offers a number of opportunities for intellectual development in combination with practical experience and hand-on application. In these international internships, interns are allowed to work alongside grassroots organizations: taking part in a rare, once-in-a-lifetime chance of learning AND cultural immersion.

An internship in a foreign country offers benefits beyond mere professional development, but personal development as well. IFRE's internships in Asia, Africa and Latin America all offer an unconventional and independent opportunity for interns to be completely immersed in both a culture and its respective environment (both work and natural). The experience encountered by interning abroad in Asia, Africa and Latin America lends a real-world understanding of developing countries rich in culture which is not achievable through just travel or study alone. These are just some of the reasons for choosing IFRE's international internships:

Experience

IFRE is one of the leading providers of international volunteer/internship aboard programs - successfully placing more than 800 volunteers and interns in a number of grassroots organizations. Through IFRE's international programs, volunteers and interns are introduced into a realm of learning, serving and immersion within local cultures - a truly unique experience guaranteed to last a lifetime. With a nearly 99% success rate, we invite you to join the hundreds of already satisfied participants. If you would like to speak with our past participants, please let us know.

A Personal Supervisor

One of the most distinguished features of IFRE's internships is the guidance of our respectable supervisors. Whichever project you choose, IFRE will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship abroad. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the intern's chosen project. During your time as an international intern, you will be assigned a number of duties which volunteers also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between IFRE's volunteers and interns). Wherein exists the difference between interning and volunteering is that the internship allows individuals the opportunity to become more deeply involved in their chosen project (i.e. individuals interning in the women's issues projects can further explore issues such as the trafficking of women, domestic violence, etc). Please note: the project supervisor DOES NOT develop internships, as this is up to the intern to achieve as much or as little from their chosen project. ALL participants are encouraged to be proactive to ensure the ultimate success of their internship. Supervisors will provide at least five (5) hours each week to make certain that interns are adequately guided.

College Credit

You can earn academic credit for nearly every type of IFRE's internships abroad. The optimal way to receive academic credit is through your college/university. Therefore, please contact your respective faculty/academic advisor about receiving college credit for your internship work. Your college/university may need additional information about the program prior to approval, as well as require you to submit a research paper or other requirements. Alternatively, you can earn academic credit through Seattle Central Community College (SCCC). SCCC offers college credit for international programs such as: study abroad, volunteer abroad, intern abroad, language studies and even the cultural-exchange aspect of a home-stay. IFRE suggests contacting Professor Steve Tash (please ask us for pertinent contact information) to further explore the option of receiving course credit for your international internship. IFRE is not associated with SCCC; so please make sure that you can transfer SCCC credit to your respective university.
