IFRE's orphanage-based volunteer project offers a rewarding opportunity for eager participants to lend a helping hand in providing care, time, compassion, an education and recreational stimulation to the orphaned and street-dwelling children of Honduras who have been rescued by local organizations.
Volunteers may choose to contribute either part-time or full-time and may devote their time and personal skills to these numerous, altruistic foundations and organizations who endeavor to provide both a stable environment for these children to call home in addition to a basis of a proper education – preparing these abandoned children for a future in which they have an improved chance of succeeding.
Skills/Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required to join the orphanage project in Honduras . However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help less fortunate children as well as have a strong personality to deal with these children's often unfortunate situations and demeanors. While Spanish is preferred it is not required. IFRE offers free Spanish lessons to participants volunteering in Honduras . All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive as well as possess a “can-do” attitude.
Volunteers' Responsibilities
Volunteers in Honduras may help these orphaned children in the following ways: teach Basic English, supervise/create games, assist in creativity-based activities (painting, art classes, etc.), assist the children with their homework assignments, as well as serve within the capacity of a companion to the children. Volunteer may also be asked to assist in daily routines of the designated center, including (but not limited to): cooking, cleaning, routine maintenance, laundry, etc. Volunteers possessing skills and/or a background in child psychology as well as fluent in Spanish will have the obvious advantage – ensuring the highest level of contribution and effective interaction. While these skills are welcomed, they are not required of volunteers wanting to participate in this particular project.
Room/Food
Volunteering in Honduras will allow you to experience the culture, the delicious food and effectively improve your Spanish. Volunteers will stay with a host family for the entire program where they will be provided with three (3) meals a day with the occasional “to go” lunch for times when volunteer projects require that participants be away from their host families during midday. We provide supervision during your home stay and also in your volunteering project. Detailed housing information will be provided before volunteers arrive in Honduras . |
