With such a high demand for English education in Honduras , a proper English education produces numerous opportunities for local people. In partnership with various local schools, IFRE strives to provide English education (primarily conversational English to local schools). Volunteer English-teaching projects are located throughout Honduras in both rural and urban communities. Volunteers usually work as teachers in either private or public schools at either the elementary or high school level – honing Ecuadorian students' English-speaking skills.

Our volunteer program is a great opportunity to teach children and teens in secondary and primary schools, in and around the city of Copan Ruinas . The schools in these areas are very poor and lack sufficient English-speaking volunteers. During this program you'll educate children and teens on the correct use of English words and master English grammar. You must be comfortable teaching a class of 30 or so students, and know enough Spanish to interact with them.

Skills/Qualifications

No specific qualifications are required to join the English-teaching project in Honduras . However, interested individuals should have a passion and desire to teach younger children (and occasionally teenagers) and be comfortable fulfilling the role of English-instructors and/or teachers' aides. While Spanish is preferred it is not required.. All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive.

Volunteers' Responsibilities

Volunteers will assist school-based educators as well as language institutes in teaching English to young children throughout Honduras . Young students will dramatically benefit from the contributions of proficient English-speaking volunteers willing to dedicate their time and efforts. Volunteers can expect to assist in developing conversational and (possibly) grammatical English skills. Volunteer may also lend their personal expertise in designing learning activities to encourage the younger learners' participation and interests. Volunteer will also support teachers who are already in the process of instructing Honduran children enrolled in English-teaching curriculums. Administrative duties of educational institutes may be required of volunteers as well. Educating the younger learners pertaining to issues of personal hygiene and sanitation may also be required.

Room/Food

Volunteering in Honduras will allow you to experience the culture, the delicious food and effectively improve your Spanish. Volunteers will stay with a host family for the entire program where they will be provided with three (3) meals a day with the occasional “to go” lunch for times when volunteer projects require that participants be away from their host families during midday. We provide supervision during your home stay and also in your volunteering project. Detailed housing information will be provided before volunteers arrive in Honduras .
