As in any still-developing country, Honduras ' healthcare system is somewhat lacking in the effectiveness of the services which it is able to provide to its often-impoverished citizens. With the help of those willing to lend their expertise and assistance, IFRE's volunteer projects in Honduras are eager to accept individuals looking to gain a genuine perspective on the healthcare available to the citizens of a developing nation.
Within these projects (depending on the experience of each and every interested individual), volunteers impart priceless support to healthcare professionals who are often struggling to not only keep up with the frequent AND numerous medical advances, but are also facing a downward spiraling dilemma of providing ample healthcare to individuals who can (and often cannot) afford vital treatment needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Skills/Qualifications
Volunteers/Interns interested in joining the volunteer health program in Honduras must possess some proof of healthcare certification, such as an ID as a medical student, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. IFRE's partnering hospitals/healthcare clinics require a copy of your resume – clearly stating credentials and education – before your arrival at your assigned project. While Spanish is preferred it is not required. IFRE offers free Spanish lessons to participants volunteering in Honduras . All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive.
Volunteers' Responsibilities
Volunteers participating within the capacity of a medical volunteer in Honduras will have various duties depending on education, skills, experience, and qualifications. Volunteers are not permitted to perform major diagnoses or surgical duties. Usually, volunteers will assist doctors – usually within the capacity of an assistant. Volunteers can expect to perform the following duties: measure blood pressure, body temperature, record patients' height, weight, etc. Volunteers may also provide much-needed assistance in various health “camps,” distribute medication, provide tips to patients regarding proper health, nutrition, personal hygiene, sanitation as well as providing general counsel to in-need Hondurans. Qualified participants may also assist in treating minor wounds and ailments as well as record-keeping. Additionally, assistance may be needed in supporting various healthcare campaigns addressing numerous illnesses and conditions affecting the citizens of Honduras .
Room/Food
Volunteering in Honduras will allow you to experience the culture, the delicious food and effectively improve your Spanish. Volunteers will stay with a host family for the entire program where they will be provided with three (3) meals a day with the occasional “to go” lunch for times when volunteer projects require that participants be away from their host families during midday. We provide supervision during your home stay and also in your volunteering project. Detailed housing information will be provided before volunteers arrive in Honduras . |
