Most of stuffs of daily use are available in Costa Rica at a cheaper price. However, we suggest volunteers pack the following things.
Camera
Mobile phone (you can use mobile phone after changing sim card)-only bring cell phones that have multi-national coverage. You cannot switch to a new card here on the local phone system without being a resident and having a receipt for your phone on you.
Sleeping bag-only if you really want to camp
Mosquito repellents (just the insect repellent is fine)
Insect repellents
Sun-block
Working gloves (if you are joining conservation or construction project)
Some books about Costa Rica

Toiletries
First aid kit
Flash light
Electricity adopter/converter (electricity is on the same system as the States)
