As the rest of the world catches up to the communication levels of the developed, industrialized nations, computers are seen are not only perceived as useful as a source of entertainment, but as a pivotal key to communications and a integral provider of education. Children and adults alike are captivated by the usefulness of computers in today's fast-paced societies. Being well-versed in the function of computers not only helps Brazilians to communicate with people in various corners of the world, but also helps citizens in preparing them to seek employment in the technological realm AND the global market.

Volunteers with knowledge relating to computers are encouraged to participate in this program. Whether an program-writing specialist in C++, knowledgeable in word-processing software, skilled in graphic design/lay-out programs or a electrical specialist with hardware-installing abilities, volunteers familiar with all things computer-related are very necessary and appreciated.

Skills/Qualifications

No specific qualifications are required to join the volunteer Computer Skills project in Brazil . However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help less fortunate children. While Portuguese is preferred it is not required. IFRE offers free Portuguese lessons to participants volunteering in Brazil . All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive.

Volunteers' Responsibilities

Volunteers teaching computer skills to the very receptive citizens of Brazil will teach basic computer skills at a number of community-based organizations/programs. Volunteers usually assist community centers in some of the more impoverished areas of Rio de Janeiro who are usually not well-funded enough to be able to afford computer instructors. Volunteers will also help Brazilians (children and adults) to develop and perfect their conversation English and interpersonal communication skills. Volunteers will also assist these centers in installing both software and hardware for their computers as well as lend a hand in various administrative duties required.

Room/Food

IFRE manages living accommodations and meals within a volunteer hostel located in a quaint neighborhood within the city of Rio de Janeiro . The city of Rio de Janeiro is famous for a number of icons representative of Brazil – i.e. the statue of Christ the Redeemer hovering over the city, the spinning colors of the various samba schools (‘sambadoras'), numerous beaches, and more. With easy access to public transportation, volunteers have this world-class city at their fingertips. Within these accommodations, volunteers have numerous amenities such as: television, a kitchen, internet services, laundry, etc. Detailed housing information will be provided before volunteers arrive in Rio de Janeiro . IFRE manages 3 local foods a day . Occasionally, volunteers will also be required to prepare/serve their own meals
