A disease affecting all citizens (regardless of race, sexual orientation, age) of all countries (industrialized or developing), HIV/AIDS continue to decimate populations around the world. In affiliation with various health clinics and educational outreach organizations, IFRE desperately needs volunteers to assist in a wide range of activities to help slow the spread of and educate others about HIV/AIDS. Volunteers will participate in programs addressing prevention, providing comfort to all individuals affected/infected (friends and family members). Additionally, volunteers can expect to work with often-uninformed healthcare professionals, sex trade workers, at-risk children/young adults and uneducated Brazilian citizens.
HIV/AIDS projects are located throughout the sprawling streets of Rio de Janeiro . In this amazing city, IFRE works with a number of organizations (NGOs, governmental, healthcare clinics, outreach programs, etc.) working together to provide some form of relief and education in attempt to address the problems and symptoms associated with contraction – ultimately stunting the spread of this illness and its symptoms and infections.
Skills/Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required to join the volunteer HIV/AIDS project in Brazil . However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help less fortunate children. While Portuguese is preferred it is not required. IFRE offers free Portuguese lessons to participants volunteering in Brazil . All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive.
Volunteers' Responsibilities
Volunteers in IFRE's HIV/AIDS projects will assist a number of organizations (NGOs, governmental, community-based, etc.) in educating the Brazilian masses about the spread and acquisition of HIV/AIDS. Public health campaigns addressing the issues surrounding those affected by HIV/AIDS are in constant need of help in all areas – outreach, psychological aspects, medical advice, etc. Volunteers will supply much-needed assistance to healthcare professionals, social workers, health clinics, non-profit organizations, and government agencies through Rio de Janeiro .
Room/Food
IFRE manages living accommodations and meals within a volunteer hostel located in a quaint neighborhood within the city of Rio de Janeiro . The city of Rio de Janeiro is famous for a number of icons representative of Brazil – i.e. the statue of Christ the Redeemer hovering over the city, the spinning colors of the various samba schools (‘sambadoras'), numerous beaches, and more. With easy access to public transportation, volunteers have this world-class city at their fingertips. Within these accommodations, volunteers have numerous amenities such as: television, a kitchen, internet services, laundry, etc. Detailed housing information will be provided before volunteers arrive in Rio de Janeiro . IFRE manages 3 local foods a day. Occasionally, volunteers will also be required to prepare/serve their own meals |
