Salvador has a tropical type of climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Temperatures change with altitude and show little seasonal change. The central plateau and mountain areas experience moderate climate.
Temperatures change more with altitude than with season. The Pacific lowlands are the hottest region, the annual averages temperature of the Pacific range from 25 ° C to 29 ° C. The central plateau region experiences an annual average temperature of 23 ° C. In the mountains though the average annual temperature ranges from 12 ° C to 23 ° C it frequently goes down below freezing point.
The monsoon season, extends from May to October. Rainfall on the south-facing mountain slopes can be even up to 200 centimeters. Rainfall results from low pressure over the Pacific and comes down as heavy afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricanes, which are frequent to Pacific, generally will not affect Salvador.
